This site currently hosts two main official versions of the story (see the revision history for details). The ILCOE, the final incarnation of the 3.x series, was started in 2004 and completed in 2018. In 2021-2022, I made a number of revisions to it - primarily fixing grammatical mistakes and the like, plus occasional slightly bigger changes where I could easily fix something in a few minutes; I've called this version "ILCOE-patch", or "ILCOEp". This is probably the version you should read, if you just want to read the completed story.

In 2018-2019, I wrote a commentary on every chapter of the ILCOE, commenting my thoughts throughout each chapter - about changes I would want to make, things that are silly, the story behind certain developments as far as I could remember it, how elements evolved over time over the story's many revisions, and so on. This was prior to the 2021-2022 patch version, so the commentary is on the older, slightly clumsier versions of those chapters. You can find the original ILCOE with commentary here.

The IALCOTN of the 4.x series was a later revision started in 2005, and is for the most part a significant improvement over the corresponding chapters of the ILCOE. However, versions 3.x and 4.x are not internally consistent with one another; events have been changed and moved, some worldbuilding tweaked, and various chapter splits reconsidered. Please don't attempt to read the IALCOTN and then skip the first chapters of the ILCOE - you'll get confused.
