01/23/2010: Dragon styles up

So. If you haven't noticed, the Thunderyu, Volcaryu and Polaryu styles I've been talking about for ages are up. If you desperately want to continue using the Chalenor and Chaletwo styles, however, they still work if your cookie is set to one of them, and you can set it by clicking the links I just gave you.

Polaryu style took a while to get made since I got lazy with making the Polaryu sprite trace that now decorates the Polaryu style, and once I started making it, it was quite a challenge, mostly because I had to shade each of the crystals individually and I wasn't really sure exactly how to go about shading them to begin with, though I ended up doing something that I think came out pretty well. It's my favorite style now, anyhow.

Comments on the styles are of course always welcome.

Whaa? no more Chaletwo style? T_T

Ah well, Polaryu's style is pretty close, so I won't complain. The new styles have pretty good color schemes… nothing eye hurting. The links are also not like the old Chalenor style, which I appreciate fully. Good Job Butterfree!
SilverLatios47 (01/24/2010 01:13:31)
Gosh, even though bright layouts are not nice to my computer, it's hard not to use the Polaryu one. I'm probably gonna stick with Volcaryu style, though. The sprite trace of Polaryu looks so spiffy *_*
GB (01/24/2010 02:10:48)
Polaryu looks beautiful. @_@ The others look awesome, but Polaryu is definitely my favorite.
Pure Umbreon (01/24/2010 04:45:03)
So I just noticed that I can keep Chaletwo style… I need to read more carefully sometime, I guess.
Emerald Espeon (01/24/2010 05:04:05)
I love the new styles, the Polaryu trace is amazing! And I love those subtle clouds in the background of the Thunderyu one, unless they're actually not there and I'm just imagining them…
Steele (01/24/2010 08:24:53)
Ooh…Nice. Volcaryu is sorta like Chalenor style, in my opinion, and Polaryu is like Chaletwo style. Thunderyu is the best though. I should read the dragon battles in each of their individual styles. (It makes it more dramatic if you read chapters in certain styles, try reading the Acaria Gym Battle in Chalenor Style)
Great job, you never dissapoint me!
Leafpool (01/24/2010 14:08:00)
Totally using Polaryu style even though I was using Chalenor before and the two are nothing alike. :V
Oh-Paching (01/24/2010 18:15:34)
Emerald Espeon: I'm pretty sure you're imagining them. XD
Anyway, I like Thunderyu style the most. The yellow is dark, which is nice, but not dark enough like Volcaryu in which you have to use bright lettering. And all the dragon pictures are awesome.
Butterfree (01/24/2010 18:20:41)
No, you're not imagining them; there are subtle clouds in the Thunderyu style background.
Fox McCloud (01/25/2010 08:35:02)
Volcaryu: Original with added bonuses and less eye-hurt. Great job.
Polaryu: Very similar to Chalenor, with a great color scheme.
Thunderyu: Epic. You used the perfect shade of yellow. Perfect. It matches my Yellow version now. ^_^;;

Also… Yay for cleaning up the title area.

For those who prefer it… You might want to keep the old styles up anyway. But I have no idea who would. (Maybe I'm just too used to them, lol.)
b_l_minu (01/25/2010 20:34:12)
I like these a lot, they give the page a more open look. The older two layouts feel smaller.

Just one little nitpick, I think the outlines on Polaryu stand out too much, especially on the crystals on its body. Thunderyu's outlines are colored and nice, and although Volcaryu's are black they work with the dark layout.

Butterfree (01/25/2010 21:14:45)
You may be right about Polaryu. I changed the outlines on the banner to the same style as Thunderyu's.
Tiffano (01/26/2010 04:33:39)
Polaryu is definitely my favorite layout :} It reminds me of the Articuno style you have on TCoD.

A bit of curiosity: Do you use a tablet for these things or do you just use a mouse? :O
Butterfree (01/26/2010 06:21:11)
I use a mouse, though this is all done in Illustrator, rendering that point kind of moot (that is, it consists of placing points and adjusting curves, not actually dragging the mouse to create a line).
Tiffano (01/27/2010 02:36:32)
I see, haha.
puredragon222 (01/27/2010 07:44:19)
No, offence, and this has bothered me on the sprite too, but Volcaryu's right - our right - foot looks a little massive.
Butterfree (01/27/2010 17:03:34)
I'm not sure why people keep being bothered by Volcaryu's feet when there are several real Pokémon with feet exactly like that. He has those feet as a remnant of Kangaskhan, which they originally came from in the splices. Sure, it's odd, but if it's okay on Kangaskhan, why not on Volcaryu?
Tiffano (01/27/2010 23:51:20)
I don't know about you guys, but I think that massive chunk looks cute LOL. :}
Rose (01/28/2010 04:59:05)
Ooh, the new styles are nice! Great job, Butterfree! I'm keeping chaletwo though. I was just thinking "Wait! The Chaletwo style means TQFTL to me! I can't change it!" I guess I'm kinda weird like that- sometimes the smallest things become traditions to me! The dragons are very cute though. :)
a little boy (01/29/2010 05:14:13)
the styles are nice, but i disapprove of your use of Papayrus in the thunderyu header.
Butterfree (01/29/2010 09:06:05)
Can somebody please explain to me what people have against Papyrus being used as a decorative font? Yes, people have gone around using it as a base font for writing all sorts of text that has no business being in a decorative font, but as a title, on a banner, where it fits with the intended overall effect? Really?

By all means point me to another faded/ancient sort of font that the Internet doesn't hate if you know one. I can never find good fonts for a specific purpose.
L Xero (01/29/2010 17:41:02)
Polayru is you're favorite style? Mrs. Morbid likes bright colors?
Butterfree (01/29/2010 18:47:22)
Yes, actually; I generally prefer reading black text on a light background over light text on a black background. Used to invariably use Chaletwo over Chalenor, too. It's not like I'm some sort of an emo EVERYTHING MUST BE DARRRRK AND HORRIBLE type. I mean, I don't even like horror movies.
Scytherian Poetry (02/02/2010 13:53:31)
You dont like the Chalenor? Personally, I miss it. Thunderyu is nice, and I like Volcaryu, but could you also include Chalenor and Chaletwo?
Butterfree (02/02/2010 14:39:18)
…for the love of God, I LINKED TO THEM IN THE FIRST POST and specifically talked about how I was keeping them there if you want to keep them. What is so difficult about noticing it?
Lugia (02/04/2010 08:54:51)
I really like the styles except for Volcaryu's, but that's just me, no real reason for it except that I don't like red on black websites. It's too used, I think, but that doesn't matter.
I just wanted to mention, the crystals on Polaryu's left arm (our right) are angled oddly. They look like they're attached to its elbow, but are facing the wrong direction to be sticking out from it. Is it meant to look like that?
Butterfree (02/04/2010 10:10:00)
They're not attached to the elbow; they're embedded into the upper arm.
Kitsune (02/15/2010 03:54:57)
Nice work on the new styles, but the drop-down menu is kind of messed up in IE6; it won't go away. (I need a better version. T_T)
Butterfree (02/15/2010 04:08:53)
…what drop-down menu? o.o
Kitsune (02/15/2010 16:35:05)
Well, the menus showing all the styles and places on the site and such (Introduction, About, Spoiler Warnings…). It blocks the main page and doesn't go away. The menus were supposed to be on the side, right?
Butterfree (02/15/2010 18:23:05)
…in which style?
Kitsune (02/15/2010 19:10:47)
Volcaryu and Thunderyu. I'm pretty sure Polaryu is as well, but I'm afraid to try it because when I first tried Thunderyu the page froze up on me. o,o It's why I haven't been on here for a while.

I can't see the forums, either. Oh, the troubles.
Butterfree (02/15/2010 21:32:37)
That's… extremely weird, considering the CSS for positioning their menus is extremely basic and uses a very tried and true technique. Exactly what is it like? Can you give me screenshots or something? And what happens when you try to go to the forums?
Kitsune (02/15/2010 21:58:19)
How do you post screenshots? The menus are a tad left to the center of the screen, and block text and whatnot. I can't even log in because they block what I'm supposed to type in for spam verification. As for the forums, I can go to the forums page, but if I click on a thread, the page is blank save for the list of page numbers (and no matter which page I click on, it's blank).

…Ew. Lickilicky spammy. [/completelyofftopic]
Butterfree (02/15/2010 22:19:01)
Okay, with the help of a website that can show you how IE6 renders things, it seems I've fixed it. Ironically, Polaryu actually would have worked right in IE6.

Volcaryu still looks awful in IE6, of course, since it uses alpha-transparent PNGs, but both Thunderyu and Polaryu should work fine. No idea what's up with the forums, though.
Kitsune (02/15/2010 22:36:10)
All right, everything works fine now, including the forums. Thank you! :3
